Lesson 15: Students examine the main reasons for England鈥檚 conflict with Spain in the build up to the invasion of the Spanish Armada using factors such as religion, trade & commerce, the actions of Francis Drake and events in the Netherlands.

A 21 slide fully resourced lesson containing warm up & learning review activities, a choice of tasks, printable resources and a printable knowledge organiser with all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2: Warm Up - Map Skills - Students analyse a map of the Spanish Empire in Europe to discuss the reasons for tension and conflict by the 1580s.
  • Slide 3: Recap - Aimed at higher ability students. What can students remember from the topic so far about why there was tension between England and Spain. Includes additional challenge question.
  • Slide 4-5: Recap - Aimed at all students. Students use 6 clipart images to discuss the reasons for increasing tension between England and Spain. Answers and further prompt questions included.
  • Slide 6-7: Background information about how events in the Netherlands caused conflict.
  • Slide 8: Background information about how religion caused conflict.
  • Slide 9: Background information about how Spain鈥檚 ambitions caused conflict.
  • Slide 10: Background information about how trade & commerce caused conflict.
  • Slide 11-12: Background information about how privateering and piracy caused conflict.
  • Slide 13-14: Task 1 - Students fill in a printable table to help them explain the reasons for conflict. Includes printable resource and instructions.
  • Slide 15: Task 2 - Students rate how significant each factor was. Includes further prompt questions.
  • Slide 16: Follow up challenge questions
  • Slide 17-19: Learning Review - Guess Who? 12 guess who questions with added printable question sheet and answers.
