This lesson contains:

  • A ‘do it now’ starter which can be adjusted to fit whatever you taught previously.
  • A recap of the Russian Revolution and the impact it had on the people of Russia using a colour-coding activity and extension task to write about the positives and negatives.
  • A knowledge check for AfL purposes.
  • An introduction to Lenin’s death and introducing Stalin and Trotsky. The students then have an activity to read about both characters and complete a fact file. For Stalin they have to show his tactics and why they worked, and for Trotsky to show his tactics and why they failed.
  • A final plenary to consider Stalin’s reasons for success, rating different criteria and elaborating to consolidate the knowledge.
