Develop maths literacy and strengthen pupils’ understanding of essential algebraic language with this mixed-level Match-Up pack.

The resource includes 10 ready-to-use matching activities, 100 term-and-definition matches, complete solutions and an accompanying PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.

Many pupils can follow an algebraic method but struggle to understand and accurately use the specialist vocabulary found in lessons, worked examples and examination questions. This structured, low-preparation resource provides an ideal opportunity to embed literacy in maths while reinforcing the language pupils need to discuss algebra confidently.

Vocabulary includes:

• algebra
• algebraic notation
• unknown
• constant
• like term
• collect like terms
• substitution
• input
• output
• domain
• cubic

Each activity contains 10 lettered terms and 10 numbered definitions. Pupils read carefully and match each term to its precise meaning, developing vocabulary, retrieval, reasoning and mathematical communication.

The activities help pupils distinguish between closely related concepts such as unknown and constant, like term and collect like terms, and input, output and domain.

The key vocabulary is revisited in different arrangements across the 10 activities, providing repeated retrieval practice without pupils simply memorising the position of each answer.

The accompanying PowerPoint allows each task to be displayed, discussed and completed with the whole class. Printable PDF worksheets and full solution pages are included for independent work, paired discussion, self-assessment or quick teacher marking.

Ideal for KS3 maths, GCSE Foundation support, maths literacy, starters, plenaries, retrieval practice, intervention, homework, cover lessons, tutoring, mixed-attainment classes, EAL learners and SEN support.

Part of the Beyond Printables Literacy in Maths Suite.
