When applying for a new job, you may be competing with tens or even hundreds of other applicants for the role.聽

The HR manager or headteacher recruiting for the job will be scrutinising every detail of your application to make sure they are bringing in the right people for interview.聽

The application form is the first hurdle you聽have to聽get over聽鈥撀燼nd聽it聽sets the recruiter's first impression of you.聽

The personal statement: why does it matter?聽聽

The personal statement presents the perfect opportunity to show聽that聽you are an exceptional聽candidate,聽understand teaching and know the school you are applying to.聽

You should talk about yourself and your professional achievements, while at the same time apply those experiences to the school itself.聽You need to be concise and clear 鈥 it聽shouldn鈥檛聽be too long or read like a list.聽

How to write a teaching personal statement聽

We know聽it鈥檚聽not an easy task and can be tricky to get right 鈥 so聽here鈥檚聽our guide to writing your teaching personal statement.聽

Consider the person specification聽

It's聽vital your statement matches the person specification for the role you're applying for.聽

Before you start writing,聽read through聽the person or job specification and annotate where and how you meet the essential and desirable attributes.聽

Getting these written down before you start on the statement ensures you can incorporate these throughout, and that the entire application is built around how you fit the needs of the role.聽

Your experience,聽skills聽and responsibilities

Start your statement with your experience. This聽might聽include:聽

  • Projects聽you鈥檝e聽been involved in聽

  • Extracurricular聽and enrichment聽activities聽

  • 叠别丑补惫颈辞耻谤补濒听尘补苍补驳别尘别苍迟听

  • 厂耻产箩别肠迟听别虫辫别谤迟颈蝉别听

  • Personal attributes and skills聽

In each key area, include:聽

  • Your philosophy or approach (i.e. the theory)聽

  • Your experience in that area聽聽

  • How you would use that experience in the specific (1) school and (2)聽job聽you鈥檙e聽applying聽for聽

Professional development聽

Next, move onto professional development and CPD.聽Consider what is the most relevant to the role 鈥撀燿on't聽name every bit of CPD聽you鈥檝e聽done, as this will聽likely be聽too much.聽

Instead, pick out your stand-out learnings and highlight the CPD that has a clear aim 鈥 and link this back to the job聽specification.聽

Bring it back to the school聽

By the point of writing your statement, you should have already thoroughly researched the school (so if you聽haven鈥檛聽already, make sure to do your research now).

In your personal statement, you should聽talk about why you want to work at the school聽鈥 it should be clear to the shortlist panel that聽you鈥檝e聽done your research, as this should come through in your statement.聽

It should also be clear that your聽application is tailored not just to the school, but the specific role聽you鈥檙e聽applying to (that means the department or key stage聽you鈥檒l聽be working in, too).聽

Things to keep in mind聽

There are a few things to remember throughout the process of writing your statement.聽聽

厂丑辞飞,听诲辞苍鈥檛听迟别濒濒听

Importantly, your application needs to show and not tell.聽Don鈥檛聽list what your attributes聽are;聽give聽examples that show you hold those attributes. For example, don't just say "I am聽dedicated"聽鈥 instead,聽share an example of something聽you鈥檝e聽done that shows you are dedicated.聽

Personality matters聽

Your聽educational聽philosophy聽should be聽embedded in your statement聽鈥 and it also helps if you聽give聽the statement聽some personality.聽While it should remain professional throughout, the school wants to find a teacher who is a good fit for them, so give them a flavour of who you are.聽

This might be through your tone, phrasing, and by聽including why you are passionate about the role.聽

Remember your open and close聽

A聽strong opening hooks聽the recruiter in at the beginning and finishing on a high note leaves them feeling that they want to meet you.聽So聽while you might think what鈥檚聽in the middle is more important, pay attention to your opening and closing sections聽too.聽

Don't聽copy and paste聽

And lastly聽鈥撀燿o not copy and paste between job applications.聽By copying and pasting, you risk leaving in key details such as the wrong school name, department or job title.聽

The most important thing is that聽it鈥檚聽clear聽your statement聽has been specifically written for the school and job you are applying for聽鈥 so聽getting the聽details wrong can get your application an immediate 鈥榥o鈥.聽
