Skills Starter: Match the Bird’s eye contour lines with the hills
Main Teaching: KW: Match the vocabulary to its meaning – include words they have learnt contour lines, vegetation, altitude and what they will learn in this lesson. Stick in books to refer back to.
Planet Earth – David Attenborough Episode 2 – Mountains
Discuss the words altitude, air thinning, adaptation
Look at mountain animals including mountain goats, eagles, mountain lions, eagle owl, alpaca, llama, ibex, Canadian lynx – look at the adaptation in their bodies
Clip – baby goat hurtling down mountain
Talk about where each of the animals live, what they eat and the food chain.
Talk about tree line (why do the trees stop growing) and vegetation and fauna & flora
Create a sketch diagram of a mountain scene showing the tree line labelling lack of oxygen- where the feel most creatures would live and why?
Task:
Children research an animal on the iPad to create a fact file. Need to include: what they eat, predators, prey, carnivore, herbivore or omnivore, how have they adapted to live in cold climates and high altitudes
Plenary: Look at the Adi tribe. These are some people who have adapted to mountainous conditions.
