Help young autistic children understand and manage feelings of worry at school with this gentle, visual Social Story designed for children aged 3–7 years.

Using a calming pastel pink and purple theme, this resource helps children recognise what worry can feel like, understand that their feelings are okay, and learn simple strategies they can use when school feels difficult or overwhelming.

What this Social Story helps children understand:

What it means to feel worried
Situations at school that might make them feel anxious
How worry can make their body feel
Recognising feelings such as nervousness, fear and overwhelm
Simple calming strategies
Taking slow, deep breaths
Finding a quiet or comfortable space
Asking a trusted adult for help
Using words, signs, pictures or a help card to communicate
Remembering that they are safe and supported
Understanding that worried feelings can pass
Building confidence and emotional awareness

Designed with autistic children in mind
The visual, predictable format is particularly suitable for children who benefit from simple language, visual supports and clear routines. It can also support children who are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication, by introducing alternative ways of expressing how they feel.

Ideal for:

Classrooms
Nursery and early years settings
Primary schools
SEN settings
Autism support sessions
Home learning
Parents and carers
Teachers and support staff

The resource includes a personalised “This Story Belongs to” section, allowing the child’s name to be added and helping them feel ownership of their Social Story.

A gentle reminder for children:

It is okay to feel worried. I am not alone. I can ask for help. I am safe. I am supported. I can do this.
