A complete Year 7 Food Technology lesson designed to develop students’ confidence in weighing, measuring, selecting equipment and following a recipe accurately.

This engaging lesson forms part of a Food Room Foundations unit and prepares students for their next practical lesson: Apple & Berry Crumble.

Students begin by sequencing a recipe before exploring the information recipes provide and selecting appropriate kitchen equipment. They then complete the Kitchen Skills Academy – a five-station carousel in which students apply their learning through practical and problem-solving challenges.

Students rotate through:
Accuracy Challenge – using digital scales accurately and considering how inaccurate measurements affect food products.
Measuring Master – practising accurate measurement of liquids and small quantities.
Recipe Detective – identifying missing or unclear information in a faulty recipe.
Equipment Expert – selecting the correct equipment for different food preparation tasks.
Quality Control – applying success criteria to judge the quality of finished food products.

The lesson concludes with a reflection activity and a Recipe Comic Challenge homework, in which students transform the Apple & Berry Crumble recipe into a visual recipe.
