National Curriculum: Number - multiplication and division: Notes and guidance (non-statutory)
Year 3:
Pupils develop efficient mental methods, for example, using … associativity.
Year 4
Pupils write statements about the equality of expressions. They combine their knowledge of number facts and rules of arithmetic to solve mental and written calculations .

The associative law provides a flexibility with multiplication in that you can change the grouping with 3 or more factors without changing the end result . Knowing it is possible to regroup factors lets students choose "easier” groupings for quicker calculations.

The resources are as follows:

Set 1: A visual introduction to the Associative Law of Multiplication
Set 2: Multiplying 3 Numbers - Showing that (2×3)×4 = 2×(3×4)
Set 3: Multiple Choice - Evaluating placements of the brackets & selecting the right answer
Set 4: Multiplying 3 Numbers - Students decide where to place the bracket and calculate accordingly
Set 5: Word problems
Set 6: Maze - A fun activity to reinforce the concept for homework, end of lesson, a spare for a replacement teacher etc
Set 7: A challenging activity to practice the associative law with 4 numbers .

Unlimited Worksheets . At the click of a button all the numbers are randomized. Click, PRINT and Go !! Ideal to have ready at hand as an extra activity, or a resource for a replacement teacher.

Answer are automatically created every time you print a new worksheet showing all the lines of workings.

The Teaching Pages are designed for whole class teaching with an Interactive Whiteboard or on a computer for one to one tuition with instant feedback.

Note
These resources work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers.
