A fully sequenced, Rosenshine-informed 25-lesson KS3 oracy scheme of work, built on the Oracy Framework (the four strands) and aligned to the 2024 Oracy Education Commission’s vision of oracy as the fourth “R”. Suitable across Years 7 to 9.

What’s Included
  • Lessons 1 to 5: What oracy is and the four strands, the physical strand (voice and body language), ground rules for talk (exploratory, cumulative and disputational), active listening and the social and emotional strand
  • Lessons 6 to 10: Exploratory talk and Talking Points, the six talk roles with sentence stems (Instigator, Builder, Challenger, Clarifier, Prober, Summariser), and an assessed group discussion
  • Lessons 11 to 15: The cognitive strand (claim, evidence, reasoning), the linguistic strand (register and authentic voice), rhetoric (ethos, pathos, logos), rhetorical techniques, and analysing great speeches
  • Lessons 16 to 20: Introduction to debate, building a case, rebuttal and thinking on your feet, preparing a team debate, and an assessed formal debate
  • Lessons 21 to 25: Planning a persuasive speech, crafting it, rehearsal and managing nerves, the assessed final speech, and reflection plus oracy beyond the classroom

Five companion Word documents:

  • Medium Term Plan (landscape): full 25-lesson table with objectives, sequenced activities, outcomes and four-strand codes
  • Knowledge Organiser (portrait): the four strands, kinds of talk, the six talk roles with sentence stems, rhetoric, reasoning, debate structure, the speech, and key vocabulary
  • Retrieval Practice Grids (portrait): three full grids with six questions each and a complete answer key
  • Stretch and Challenge Pack (portrait): six advanced talk formats (impromptu speaking, Socratic discussion, cross-examination and more), six conceptual questions about talk, a worked greater-depth escalation, and four challenge tasks
  • Assessment and Mark Guidance (portrait): four oracy progress descriptors, strand-by-strand assessment questions, an annotated model of strong exploratory talk, success criteria for discussion, debate and speech, and inclusion guidance
