This social story and interactive lesson, We Are All Different - We Are All Special, introduces children to the idea of neurodiversity—that every brain is unique and learns, plays, and communicates in different ways. Written for young learners K to Grade 6, the story helps children see that differences are normal, important, and something to celebrate.

Through simple language and clear visuals, children will learn that:

  • Some friends may move, talk, or learn differently.
  • Every brain has special strengths and challenges.
  • Being patient, kind, and understanding makes school a happier place for everyone.

At the end of the story, an interactive classroom activity called “Brains Work in Many Ways” gives students the chance to experience how brains work differently through puzzles, building, drawing, and matching games. This hands-on lesson reinforces acceptance, empathy, and teamwork. There are also two Optional Extension activities included that have ready-to-print visuals and templates for students.

Benefits of This Lesson:

  • Builds empathy and understanding of differences.
  • Supports positive peer relationships.
  • Encourages inclusion and respect in the classroom.
  • Gives children a meaningful way to see and celebrate neurodiversity.
