This lesson begins with a relatable starter asking students to reflect on why hunger and fullness can change during revision, stress, or after large meals, introducing the concept of biological control of eating. Core AO1 knowledge is delivered through clear explanations of homeostasis, the role of the hypothalamus, and the dual-centre model (LH and VMH), supported by diagrams, short explanations, and key research studies.

Hormonal mechanisms are explored in depth, focusing on ghrelin, leptin, and neuropeptide Y, with students linking biological processes to real-life experiences of hunger, satiety, and weight gain. Understanding is checked through fast-paced mini whiteboard questions using either/or choices linked to A-level exam skills.

Students then apply their knowledge to exam-style AO2 scenarios (e.g. hypothalamic damage in rats, real-world obesity dilemmas), supported by model answers. AO3 evaluation is developed through structured PEEL paragraphs, key research (e.g. Hetherington & Ranson, Gold, Wren et al., Woods), true/false checks, and dilemma-style debates exploring biological responsibility versus social and cultural influences. The lesson finishes with exam practice, peer assessment (WWW/EBI), and a reflective plenary.

Includes:

  • Engaging starter & retrieval practice
  • Clear AO1 explanations of neural and hormonal mechanisms
  • Dual-centre model (LH & VMH) with research support
  • Ghrelin, leptin, and NPY explained with studies
  • Mini whiteboard knowledge checks
  • AO2 application scenarios with model answers
  • AO3 evaluation using PEEL (strengths & limitations)
  • Debate tasks and exam practice
  • Peer assessment & reflective plenary

Low-prep, high-engagement, fully exam-focused
