Explore one of London’s best-known historic monuments with this engaging Nelson’s Column reading comprehension resource.

Students will learn about Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square and discover why this tall monument was built to honour Admiral Horatio Nelson.

The reading passages introduce Nelson’s role as a British naval commander and explain how he died during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 after leading the British fleet to an important victory.

Students will discover how Nelson’s Column was erected in the 1840s and designed by architect William Railton. The monument rises more than 50 metres above Trafalgar Square and is topped by a large stone statue of Nelson.

The resource explores the monument’s architectural details, including its tall granite column, decorated capital and bronze relief panels around the base. Students will learn how the panels show important events and naval battles from Nelson’s career.

The passages also introduce the four large bronze lions surrounding the base of the monument. Students will discover that the lions were added later, in 1867, and were designed by artist Sir Edwin Landseer.

The resource explains how Trafalgar Square became one of London’s most important public spaces and why Nelson’s Column remains one of its most recognisable features today.

The included comprehension questions encourage students to identify key information, recall historical facts, understand vocabulary and explain why monuments are built to remember people and events from the past.
