This lesson contains:

  • Background information which the teacher can go through about the situation in France in 1789 and the situation with Louis and his wife. The students are talked through the Estates system and complete a worksheet by taking notes from the board. There is then a knowledge check at this point.
  • An introduction to the Third Estate and their frustrations through a Abbe Sieyes quote. Then introducing the 4 problems areas using ‘CAKE’. The students then get 4 source cards with lots of info on the problems in France. The students make notes in their ‘cake’ worksheet.
  • There is an opportunity for extended writing about which groups within the Third Estate would be frustrated with the different aspects of CAKE.
  • Two options of plenaries to finish the lesson.
