A fully resourced KS3 RE lesson exploring the life and impact of Martin Luther King Jr, focusing on his role in the Civil Rights Movement and why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Students learn about segregation in the United States and how Martin Luther King Jr used non-violent protest to challenge injustice, including his leadership during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

The lesson includes a supporting reading and comprehension task, helping students develop knowledge of key events in King’s life and the impact of his actions.

Students also explore the influence of Christian teachings on Martin Luther King Jr’s approach to peace and equality, considering how religion can inspire social change.

Through discussion and reflection tasks, students evaluate the effectiveness of non-violent protest and consider what issues they would stand up for in today’s world.

The starter activity is adapted from a free resource produced by the Leeds Development Education Centre (Pathways to Peace Activity Book), which has been used to support engagement and reflection.
