Colourful, creative, and full of movement—this expressive art and design lesson is inspired by Nick Cave, the American artist and performer known for his extraordinary Soundsuits. These wearable sculptures use everyday materials to explore identity, sound, fashion, and freedom of expression.

In this high-impact, mixed media lesson, pupils will learn about Cave’s life and work before designing their own unique Soundsuits using fashion croquis, drawing, texture rubbings, and collage. The project blends costume design with personal storytelling, encouraging students to think about how we dress, move, and express ourselves through art.

Pupils will:

  • Discover who Nick Cave is and what a Soundsuit represents
  • Explore how artists use recycled materials, movement, and performance
  • Use tracing techniques and croquis templates to plan designs
  • Create three original costume ideas, each with a different mood or theme
  • Use texture rubbings, drawing, and collage to build expressive surfaces
  • Reflect on how costume can change movement, identity, and sound

What’s Included:

  • Fully illustrated PowerPoint presentation
  • Artist info sheet with images and key facts
  • Printable croquis templates (3 poses)
  • Step-by-step creative guide with suggested materials
  • Reflection and evaluation questions
  • Homework extension task

Perfect for:

  • KS2 & KS3 art (Years 4–9)
  • SEN-friendly lessons (layered, creative, movement-based)
  • Costume design, mixed media or identity-themed units
  • Black History Month, wearable art, or performance art links
  • Arts Week or creative enrichment sessions

Help your pupils unleash their creativity and design Soundsuits that sparkle, rustle, bounce and tell powerful stories.
A fantastic blend of art, design, performance and identity.
