This lesson introduces students to Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of gender development through an engaging, student-friendly approach. It begins with a relatable starter question about how gender understanding changes over time, followed by clear AO1 delivery of Kohlberg’s stages (identity, stability, constancy) using accessible explanations and real-life examples. Retrieval practice is built in to reinforce prior learning on biological explanations.

Students then consolidate understanding through fast-paced mini whiteboard questions and interactive checks for learning. AO2 application is developed through scaffolded exam-style scenarios (e.g. clothing, jobs, and childhood beliefs), with model answers demonstrating how to apply concepts such as egocentrism and cognitive development. A timed reflection task encourages students to link theory to their own experiences, increasing engagement and depth of understanding.

AO3 evaluation is taught explicitly using structured PEEL paragraphs, covering key strengths and limitations including research support (e.g. Damon), contradictory evidence (Bussey & Bandura), gender schema theory, and the issue of a binary view of gender. Understanding is reinforced through true/false checks and a dilemma-style class debate, encouraging critical thinking and discussion.

The lesson concludes with exam practice on a 16-mark question, supported by mark scheme guidance, peer assessment (WWW/EBI), and opportunities to improve responses.
