Students examine the impact/consequences that the development of the railroads, cattle industry and gold prospecting had on the indigenous peoples of the American West.

The lesson resources include:

Slide 1: Title slide
Slide 2-4: Long term recap - students match 15 key terms to either the topic of gold prospecting, cattle ranching or the railroads. Answers given with printable worksheet.
Slide 5: Lesson overview
Slide 6-7: Recap - Students given a 10 question quiz to recap their knowledge of the indigenous peoples and their lifestyle. Answers provided.
Slide 8: Starter - An image of buffalo hunting on the great plains from a railway carriage. Students analyse the image to discuss what it shows and the consequences for the indigenous peoples.
Slide 9: Railroad/Buffalo consequences - students use a similar image to deep dive into the impact the hunting of the buffalo had on the indigenous peoples.
Slide 10-11: Students complete three mini diagrams to outline the impact each development had on the indigenous peoples.
Slide 12: Follow up questions
Slide 13: Learning Review - Which consequence matches which factor? Answers provided.
