This lesson explores biological and social explanations of gender incongruence, helping students understand the complexity of gender identity. The lesson begins with a thought-provoking starter asking whether identity is shaped by biology (genes and hormones) or by social influences, introducing the nature–nurture debate.

Core AO1 knowledge is delivered through clear explanations of genetic and hormonal influences, including the androgen receptor (AR) gene (Settino & Andrea, 2020), brain structure differences (BSTc; Guillamon, 2016), and the role of hormones across development (GAHT; Hulshoff Pol et al., 2022). Students also explore social explanations, including social construction theory, cross-cultural evidence, and queer theory.

Understanding is reinforced through fast-paced mini whiteboard hinge questions, targeting key distinctions between biological and social explanations.

Students develop AO2 application skills through engaging, real-life scenarios (e.g. Riley and Sam), applying both biological and social explanations with structured model answers to support exam technique.

AO3 evaluation is taught using structured PEEL paragraphs, incorporating key research such as Karla Ramirez et al. (2021) and D’hoore & T’Sjoen (2022), alongside issues such as social sensitivity and limitations of queer theory. Students consolidate understanding through true/false checks and guided evaluation tasks.

The lesson concludes with essay-writing skill development and a dilemma-style debate exploring whether gender identity would exist without social expectations.
