Celebrate European Day of Languages on 26 September with this engaging, inclusive whole-school assembly for primary schools.

This assembly celebrates the many languages spoken across Europe and within our own school communities. Pupils explore how languages connect us to families, memories, traditions and friends, while learning why every language deserves respect.

Pupils discover how learning even a few words in another language can help us notice sounds and patterns, listen carefully, speak with confidence and understand that there is more than one way to communicate. The assembly also reinforces that mistakes are a normal part of learning and that no language is more valuable than another.

Through the story of Sam, pupils see how trying simple greetings in different languages can create connections with other children and reveal the languages spoken within their families. The story encourages curiosity about language as a way of showing kindness and making others feel welcome.

The presentation includes an interactive language echo, a guessing game featuring greetings in French, Spanish, German and Italian, and partner discussion about the languages pupils hear at home and school.

The assembly finishes with three key messages — all languages matter, trying is brave, and respect helps people feel they belong — followed by a challenge to learn a new greeting, listen carefully and notice the languages around them.
