The aim of this lesson is to assess how significant a threat early opposition and resistance to the Nazi regime posed between 1933 and 1939.

Students begin by considering why opposition to the Nazis might develop among different groups in German society, including political opponents, workers, Churches and youth groups. They evaluate the potential challenges these groups could present to Hitler’s dictatorship and justify their initial judgements.

Students then analyse a source from the SS, exploring Nazi expectations of total allegiance, loyalty and obedience to the Führer and the state. This provides an opportunity to examine how the regime attempted to create conformity and eliminate opposition.

The main task requires students to investigate different forms of early opposition and resistance to Nazi rule, including political opposition, worker resistance, religious opposition and youth opposition. Students assess why resistance developed, the methods used by opponents and how effectively the Nazis responded through repression, surveillance, intimidation and the use of the police state.

A headline plenary activity helps students consolidate their learning by summarising the nature and significance of opposition to the Nazi regime.
Students also complete an AQA-style source examination practice task if required, with structured support and a model answer provided to help develop source analysis and evaluation skills.

The enquiry question introduced at the beginning of the lesson is revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and develop their understanding of how successfully the Nazis controlled opposition and maintained their dictatorship.

The lesson includes:
A fully editable PowerPoint
Analysis of early opposition and resistance to Nazi rule
Investigation of political, worker, Church and youth opposition
Evaluation of the threat posed by opponents of the Nazi regime
Focus on Nazi methods of control, repression and intimidation
AQA A Level History source examination practice, with guided support and model answer provided
Suggested teaching strategies

Nazi Dictatorship 1933–1939 Bundle | AQA A Level History: Democracy and Nazism, Germany 1918–1945

**AQA GCE 2O A Level Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918-45** I have produced this complete bundle of resources on Nazi Germany 1933–39 to help A Level students develop a deeper understanding of how Hitler transformed Germany into a one-party dictatorship, established a totalitarian state and sought to create a Volksgemeinschaft through propaganda, terror, economic policies and social control. Students will explore how Hitler consolidated his power through the destruction of democracy, including the significance of the Night of the Long Knives, the death of Hindenburg, and the creation of the Führer state. They will examine the methods used by the Nazi regime to maintain control, including the role of the Gestapo, SS, concentration camps, censorship and terror, and evaluate how effectively fear and repression were used to secure obedience. Students will assess the effectiveness of Nazi propaganda, including the role of Joseph Goebbels, the Hitler Myth and the 1936 Berlin Olympics, considering how successfully the Nazis controlled public opinion and created the image of a powerful national leader. The bundle also examines Nazi economic policy, including autarky, the Four Year Plan, rearmament, the DAF, Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude) and Beauty of Labour, allowing students to evaluate the impact of Nazi policies on workers and the German economy. Students will analyse the impact of Nazi social policies, including the indoctrination of young people through the Hitler Youth and League of German Girls, policies towards women, and attempts to control religious groups through the Churches and Nazi Christianity. Finally, students will investigate opposition and resistance to Nazi rule, assessing the extent of opposition from political groups, young people, workers and religious organisations. The resources provided include detailed lesson plans, case studies, contemporary sources for analysis, chronological activities, exam-style questions, model answers and comprehensive mark schemes. The lessons are as follows: L1 One-Party State (Free Resource) L2 The Night of the Long Knives and Hitler’s Consolidation of Power L3 The Nazi Terror State: SS, Gestapo and Repression L4 Opposition to Nazi Rule 1933–39 L5 Nazi Propaganda and the Hitler Myth L6 Nazi Economic Policy: Autarky, Rearmament and the Four Year Plan L7 Nazi Youth Policies: Hitler Youth and Indoctrination L8 Nazi Policies Towards Women and the Family L9 Nazi Workers’ Policies: DAF, Strength Through Joy and Beauty of Labour L10 The Nazis and the Churches The lessons include both types of AQA A Level exam questions, with guidance on how to approach each question type.
