Dog Unit to Dog United is the first of five books telling the story of a football made up of dogs from a police dog unit. It is a light, humorous verse in rhyming couplets with a variable rhythm, it is not strict iambic pentameter and the syllable count varies. Because of this the verse feels loose and playful rather than tightly regular which matches the children’s book style. It is close to the tradition of comic verse or children’s verse where the rhythm is bouncy and the the rhyme drives the story. Older children can therefore use this as an example of this type of narrative poetry.
The resource contains the following activities and resources:

• A power point of the story to share with the class.
• A sheet to use as you read the story where younger children can tally or count different things. This will help with observation and listening skills.
• A rhyme sheet with pictures which can be made into a game to match different rhyming words
• A sheet which identifies the characters by picture and has blank speech bubbles which children can fill in with thoughts or speeches from the characters.
• A sheet which asks the children to order the dogs by size from smallest to largest.
• A word search with the names of the dog characters.
• A series of pictures from the books which sum up the story and can help the children re-tell the story. They could be cut up and children could then put the story in the correct order.
• A sheet where the children have to work out which dog is describing themselves .

  These are all rhyming stories which hopefully appeal to children who love dogs and football. They were written and illustrated by me alongside my 3 grand children who are 6 and 8 .They love them, so I hope you do to.
