This engaging GCSE Cold War revision activity challenges students to test common assumptions about how the Cold War began.

Students are presented with a series of provocative statements about the origins of the Cold War and must decide whether each claim is a Myth, Partly True, or Accurate. They then justify their decisions using historical knowledge and evidence.

The activity encourages students to move beyond simple recall and instead evaluate interpretations about key early Cold War developments including Soviet expansion in Eastern Europe, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the atomic bomb, and the Yalta Conference.

The resource includes a clear sequence of slides guiding students through the activity before revealing possible interpretations and historical reasoning.

The activity works well as a revision task, discussion activity, or exam-skills warm-up.

The resource includes:

A structured Cold War Myth-Busters decision activity

Five carefully designed statements exploring the origins of the Cold War

A whole-class judgement challenge asking students to identify the most misleading myth

Teacher reveal slides with suggested reasoning

A final evaluation task encouraging students to weigh different causes of the Cold War

A short teacher guidance slide

Designed for GCSE History courses studying the Cold War, particularly Edexcel: Superpower Relations and the Cold War, 1941–91, but easily adaptable for AQA, OCR, and Eduqas.

The activity develops key disciplinary skills including causation, interpretation, evidence use, and historical judgement.
