This 23-page pack covers the whole of the CIE/CAIE 9990 research methodology specification, written to match the syllabus wording and structured around how Paper 2 is actually assessed.

The six research methods: experiments (laboratory and field, independent measures, repeated measures, matched pairs, counterbalancing, random allocation, order effects), self-reports (questionnaires and interviews, open and closed questions), case studies, observations (overt/covert, participant/non-participant, structured/unstructured, naturalistic/controlled), correlations, and longitudinal studies. Each with main features, a strengths-and-weaknesses table, links to the core studies that used it, and guidance on applying it to an unseen scenario.

Methodological concepts: aims and hypotheses (null, alternative, directional, non-directional); independent and dependent variables and operationalisation; controlling participant and situational variables; quantitative, qualitative, subjective and objective data; sampling and populations (opportunity, random, volunteer); ethical guidelines for human participants and for animals; validity including ecological validity; reliability (inter-rater, inter-observer, test-retest) and replicability.

Data analysis: tables, measures of central tendency, range and standard deviation, bar charts, histograms and scatter graphs — including what candidates are not required to do.

Section B planning: the general features required in every plan, a separate checklist for each research method and what to evaluate.

Also included: a table mapping all 12 core studies to their research methods and techniques, for the Section A questions that ask about methods within a named study, plus a full revision checklist.
