This is an Upper Intermediate (CFER level B2 or C1) reading and speaking lesson on the topic of social media.

The skills taught in this lesson are based on the reading and writing components of the IELTS exam, but the lesson is also appropriate for any Intermediate/Upper Intermediate classes especially those with an academic focus.

The skills taught include:
• Vocabulary extension
• Use of Idioms
• Developing reading skills – prediction. skimming. scanning. reading in detail Note the text and questions are easier than the IELTS versions as the focus is on skills development
• Developing speaking competence and confidence. There are 4 activities that are suitable for differentiation, task cards provided.

i. simple short answer questions (comparable to IELTS Speaking part 1)
ii. complex questions (comparable to IELTS Speaking part 3)
iii. Preparing and presenting a one-minute talk on a given topic related to
social media (comparable to IELTS task 2)
iv. Taking part in a role play discussion
• Optional writing task for extension/homework

All of these are presented as pair work activities providing relevant and meaningful speaking practice for ALL students as well as non- threatening IELTS practice for IELTS students.

In all cases the students have the opportunity (and should be encouraged ) to use and practise the vocabulary presented in Activity 1, 2 and 3.
You can use these activities to differentiate learning in a mixed ability group or use all 4 to extend students as they gain confidence.

I have checked this carefully, but if you find any errors, typos etc. please let me know so that I can fix it.

Slides print to A4 paper and language is UK/Australian English
