This is a five week KS2 writing unit inspired by the picture book The Promise by Nicola Davies.
The unit uses the themes of transformation, responsibility and hope to support pupils in developing rich descriptive writing, narrative skills and thoughtful reflection.

Pupils explore how a bleak city changes over time, using short burst writing, drama and discussion to build vocabulary, ideas and confidence before moving into longer pieces of writing.

Across the unit, children will:

• Explore setting through imagery and figurative language
• Develop empathy by writing from different viewpoints
• Use drama and oracy to support ideas before writing
• Practise key grammar skills in context
• Plan, draft, edit and publish an extended piece of writing

The unit includes:

• A clear five week sequence
• Short burst writing activities
• Grammar starters linked to the writing
• Opportunities for drama, discussion and visual mapping
• Extended writing outcomes including description, letters and narrative

This resource is ideal for Year 5 or Year 6, and can be adapted easily for different classes.
