5 KS2 non-fiction reading comprehensions about Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age: hunter-gatherers, Stone Age cave art, the village of Skara Brae, Stonehenge, and the Bronze and Iron Ages. Differentiated: every text has a shorter support version. VIPERS questions, simple language that EAL learners can access, and links to the KS2 History study of changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. No prep needed.

WHAT’S INCLUDED (25-page PDF)

  • 5 non-fiction texts (about 150 words each) with a key-words box on every page
  • 5 support versions (about 40 words) with four simple questions each
  • 30 VIPERS questions, each labelled: Retrieve, Vocabulary, Infer, Explain, Predict, Summarise
  • Word work for every text
  • Vocabulary matching and gap-fill
  • “Which text?â€ quiz and comparison chart
  • Word search (15 words)
  • Writing task: a diary of a day at Skara Brae, with planning frame
  • Teacher notes with lesson flow, ways to use it, support and challenge
  • Full answer key (3 pages)

HOW TO USE IT

One text a week, in order, so the class moves through time from the first hunter-gatherers to the Iron Age. Also works as guided reading: groups read the level that suits them, then discuss together. Good for reading stations, homework and cover lessons. Every page works on its own.

WHO IT’S FOR

KS2 classes (reading level suits Years 3–4, topic fits Years 3–6) and EAL learners in Years 4–7 (about CEFR A2–B1).
