A complete, ready to teach GCSE maths lesson on solving linear equations, free to download. 31 slides with teacher notes on every slide, so you can pick it up and teach it straight away.

The lesson builds step by step using the balance method:

  • Learning objectives at three levels: must, should and could
  • Warm up on missing numbers, expanding a bracket, collecting like terms and negatives, with answers
  • Key words: equation, unknown, solution and inverse operation
  • Key idea: keep the balance, shown with a balance scale diagram, plus inverse operations
  • One and two step equations: three worked examples, including a negative answer, then six questions with answers
  • Brackets and unknowns on both sides: a four step plan and three worked examples
  • A practice set of six equations with a full answer slide
  • Problem solving: an I think of a number puzzle, a rectangle perimeter and comparing two gym prices
  • An exam style question (5 marks) on the angles in a triangle, with a mark scheme
  • Common mistakes, an exit ticket with answers and a key points summary

Every worked example is set out line by line with the operation shown for each step, and every answer is checked by substitution. All diagrams are native PowerPoint shapes, so everything is fully editable.

Suitable for GCSE Foundation and Higher tier and Key Stage 3, and works for AQA, Edexcel and OCR.

If you find it useful, a quick review would be really appreciated. The full series of GCSE maths lessons from WorldofTeaching on 糖心Vlog also includes Trigonometry SOHCAHTOA, Area and Circumference of Circles, and Expanding and Factorising Quadratics.
