Develop maths literacy and strengthen pupils’ understanding of essential number vocabulary with this Level 2 Developing Match-Up pack.

The resource includes 10 different matching activities, 100 term-and-definition matches, complete solutions and an accompanying PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.

Many pupils can complete number calculations but struggle to understand or accurately use the specialist language found in lessons and examination questions. This resource provides a structured, low-preparation way to embed literacy in maths lessons while revising key KS3 and GCSE Foundation content.

Vocabulary includes:

Number types and ordering: natural number, positive number, negative number, odd, even, ordinal number, ascending order, descending order and number line
Factors, powers and roots: prime factor, factor tree, prime factorisation, highest common factor, lowest common multiple, power, index, square root, cube root, cube number and standard form
Fractions and percentages: unit fraction, improper fraction, equivalent fraction, mixed number, decimal fraction, denominator, simplify a fraction, percentage increase, percentage decrease, percentage change and decimal multiplier
Ratio and proportion: ratio, ratio notation, proportion, direct proportion, unitary method, multiplier and trigonometric ratio
Accuracy: approximation, rounding, bounds, lower bound and error interval
Operations and number properties: addend, dividend, quotient, subtrahend, number bonds to ten, BIDMAS, commutativity, associativity, distributivity and equivalent

Each activity contains 10 lettered terms and 10 precise definitions. Pupils read carefully and match each term to its meaning, developing vocabulary, retrieval, reasoning and mathematical communication.

The activities help pupils distinguish between commonly confused ideas such as power and index, ratio and proportion, bounds and error intervals, HCF and LCM, and percentage change and decimal multipliers.

The included PowerPoint allows each task to be displayed and discussed with the whole class. Printable PDF worksheets and full solution pages are also provided for independent work, self-assessment or quick teacher marking.

Ideal for KS3 maths, GCSE Foundation preparation, maths literacy, starters, plenaries, retrieval practice, revision, intervention, homework, cover lessons, tutoring, mixed-attainment classes, EAL learners and SEN support.

Part of the Beyond Printables Literacy in Maths Suite.
