This is a lesson which meets specification points within the WJEC GCSE ‘The Sciences’ Double Award (2026) spec, specifically from Unit 1.3 - Systems (Biology)

The lesson begins with an introduction to asthma, students are taught about the condition and given examples of possible triggers that may cause an attack.

Next, students will watch a video on how asthma affects breathing, whilst watching the video students can answer a set of questions which is provided on the PowerPoint slide. After this task is completed, students can assess their work using the answers provided.

The next part of the lesson focuses on peak flow measurements. Firstly, students will be taught about peak flow meters, what they are used for and how they are operated. Then, after watching a short video on how to use peak flow meters, students can complete a practical activity to take peak flow measurements and then interpret the results.

The last task is a past-paper exam question on this topic, students can complete and then self or peer-assess using the mark scheme provided.
