Can a town survive a 44°C Heatwave? – KS3 Geography Lesson

This engaging, enquiry-based KS3 geography lesson explores the impacts of climate change through the lens of increasing UK heatwaves. Using the record-breaking 2022 heatwave as a starting point, students investigate how extreme temperatures affect people, places and infrastructure before considering why the UK must adapt to a hotter future.

The lesson culminates in a real-world decision-making challenge where students become climate adaptation consultants for Harlow Town Council. Working collaboratively, they create contingency plans for both the local community and their school, evaluating a range of adaptation strategies including green infrastructure, cooling technologies, heatwave warning systems and changes to the built environment. Groups then present their proposals to the class, who debate and vote on the most effective solutions to produce a final class contingency plan.
