A complete, fully resourced standalone lesson on formal and informal communication in the workplace, designed for KS3 Admin & IT in England and Wales and CFE S1–S3 in Scotland. The lesson is paced for 45–50 minutes and requires no additional preparation — everything from the starter activity to the exit ticket is included.
What is included:

12-slide PowerPoint presentation with timing chips on every slide, covering the full lesson from starter to plenary
Student worksheet structured to match the lesson, including a definitions section, features comparison table, guided rewrite task and four exam-style questions
Exit ticket with three questions worth five marks, designed to be completed in the final five minutes and handed to the teacher
Full mark scheme covering both the exit ticket and all worksheet exam questions, with level descriptors, indicative content and examiner guidance notes

Lesson structure:
The lesson opens with a starter activity in which students sort four realistic workplace messages into formal or informal, identifying the features that distinguish them. Core content then covers the definition and purpose of workplace communication, the difference between formal and informal registers, the features of each, and guidance on when each is appropriate. A guided task asks students to rewrite a poorly written informal email as a professional formal email to a client, using a built-in checklist scaffold. This is followed by four exam-style questions of increasing demand, from a one-mark identification through to a four-mark analysis question. The lesson closes with a model answer reveal and a five-mark exit ticket.
Curriculum alignment:
Aligned to the KS3 National Curriculum for ICT (communicating and collaborating with ICT; presenting information for different audiences) and CFE Experiences and Outcomes TCH 3-03a and TCH 3-04a. Suitable for S1, S2 or S3 in Scotland and Years 7, 8 or 9 in England and Wales. All files are fully editable.
