A complete week of beginner Japanese, ready to teach.

Lesson 1 of a structured fifty-lesson scheme of work. Designed for one ninety-minute lesson plus around two hours of independent study, with everything prepared, including lesson notes, worksheets, answer key, display posters, flashcards and audio.

Students learn ten hiragana, thirty-two words, ten set expressions and their first sentence pattern. All four skills are within a single theme, so nothing is taught in isolation.

What’s included

  1. Lesson Notes: objectives, the writing system explained, grammar with worked examples, a table of common learner errors and their causes, and a culture note on the three depths of the Japanese bow.
  2. Script Practice: Sixteen sheets covering vowels and k-rows: stroke guidance, tracing rows, freehand grids, reading drills, dictation and a progress tracker. Includes hiragana flashcards and a slide deck with audio.
  3. Vocabulary: thirty words and ten expressions with example sentences, followed by ten graded exercises running from matching through authentic test formats to a gap-filling consolidation passage. Includes flashcards and two display posters.
  4. Listening and Speaking: shadowing conversation with pronunciation and pitch notes, ear-training tasks, and five paired and solo speaking activities, each with an observation checklist. Includes a slide deck and shadowing video.
  5. Grammar: eight drills progressing from controlled to free production, then all three test question types with a worked example.
  6. Reading: three passages in three different reading question formats, including information retrieval and a cross-referencing task.
  7. Writing: scaffolded through to free production, finishing with a practical business-card task and a self-check list.
  8. Answer Key: full solutions, model responses for open tasks, a marking rubric, and notes identifying the specific error each question was written to catch.

Why teachers choose this pack
Exam formats appear from the first lesson rather than being introduced two years later, so test question types are familiar long before they matter.
Everything is supplied in editable Word format. Change the names, adjust the pace, reformat for your groups.
Suitable for Key Stage 4, sixth form, adult education, international schools, tutors and independent learners.
No prior knowledge assumed, and no Japanese ability required to teach it. The answer key carries everything you need.
