This scripted 90-minute IB DP Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lesson helps students unpack the May 2026 prescribed titles and begin moving from title choice to a workable thesis. It is designed for Year 2 assessment preparation and focuses on the reading and interpretation skills students need before they begin essay planning.

The lesson treats title-reading as a skill rather than something students are expected to do by instinct. Students work with the May 2026 prescribed titles and practise identifying what a title is really asking, what its key terms mean in TOK, what assumptions are built into it, and how AOK choices shape the argument.

A central part of the lesson is the six-layer anatomy method, which breaks each title down into the verb, scope phrase, key terms, AOK requirement, hidden assumption, and implicit question. Students first see this modelled live, then apply it themselves to other prescribed titles.

The lesson also includes a title autopsy task, where students work in groups to define key terms, identify hidden assumptions, propose AOK pairings, and generate possible thesis directions. This is followed by a thesis stress-test, which helps students judge whether a thesis is arguable, directly answers the title, can be sustained across the essay, and invites counterclaims.

The final section asks students to commit to a title, write a provisional thesis, choose their AOKs, and identify the key term that most needs defining before drafting.
