Do Now / 5-a-day starter: quick recap questions on key Renaissance figures (Vesalius, Harvey, Sydenham) and their contributions.

Exam focus introduction: breakdown of what the 16-mark question requires (AO1 knowledge + AO2 analysis + a clear judgement). Teacher models how marks are awarded.

Question presentation: “The work of individuals was the main reason for progress in Renaissance medicine. How far do you agree?” Students identify keywords and stimulus points (e.g. Vesalius, Printing Press).

Planning task: pupils complete a scaffolded planning grid:

Agree arguments: e.g. Vesalius corrected Galen, Harvey proved circulation, Sydenham stressed observation.

Disagree arguments: e.g. Printing Press spread ideas, Reformation reduced Church power, Royal Society encouraged sharing.

Idea builder: class activity where students sort evidence into “Individual” vs “Other factor,” then decide which is stronger.

Model paragraphs: teacher provides one “agree” and one “disagree” paragraph annotated for structure (PEEL, evidence, judgement).
