A LKS2 reading and PSHE activity on charity and giving for Y3–Y4. The concepts of charity are explored through a short fiction text.

Maya’s mum uses a wheelchair. A local charity called Community Access donated money to build a ramp at their front door so her mum can get out of the flat independently, and a volunteer comes every Friday to help with the shopping. Maya has no money to give, so she’s making a map of wheelchair-friendly shops in the neighbourhood instead.

The purpose of the story is to illustrate what charities actually do, how they’re funded by strangers who’ll never meet the people they help, and the idea that giving time can be just as valuable as giving money. The three sets of differentiated questions move from recall and inference through to ethical reflection, including whether it matters if you help because you want to or because you feel you should.

As a companion to the loot box story and comprehension activity, this resource uses the same format but explores an entirely different dimension of financial behaviour: generosity rather than risk.
