12-page George Washington writing unit for grades 9–12. Includes two historical creative writing prompts, research guidance, empathy activities and rubrics.

George Washington: In My Skin — Two Historical Writing Prompts

History provides the evidence. Empathy guides the questions.

Explore the man behind George Washington’s 1796 Farewell Address through two independent, historically grounded creative writing assignments.

Prompt 1 — In My Skin: 1796

Students write a 400–600-word monologue imagining Washington delivering his Farewell Address aloud. They use historical evidence to explore his experiences, responsibilities, and concerns as he prepares to leave the presidency.

Prompt 2 — 230 Years Later: 2026

In this optional upper-level extension, students imagine Washington encountering a modern Senate reading of his Farewell Address. They research historical developments and consider how he might respond to the nation 230 years later.

What’s Included:

Two-page Teacher/Parent Introduction

Student introduction exploring historical empathy

Washington’s personal and historical background

Analysis of his opening and closing statements

Historical research guidance and QR-linked sources

Two 400–600-word writing assignments

Two separate 16-point grading rubrics

Students may complete either assignment or both. Each encourages evidence-based writing, critical thinking, and historical empathy.
