This case-based learning pack uses SpaceX as a contemporary business example to help students analyse how operations management, organisational change, leadership, culture, innovation, and strategy interact in practice. The pack is built around the assessment focus in the uploaded brief, which asks students to examine SpaceX’s new product development (NPD), process design, leadership style, innovation culture, and its main challenges and opportunities through frameworks such as the Innovation Matrix and, in the resit version, the Product–Process Matrix.

Rather than treating SpaceX only as a technology success story, the pack encourages students to see it as an operations and organisation case: reusable rockets, rapid testing, vertical integration, flatter communication, and a strong mission-driven culture are examined as management choices as well as engineering achievements.

Key learning points
By working through this pack, students should be able to:
• understand how operations strategy can create competitive advantage through cost, speed, flexibility, and process innovation
• explain how NPD and process design are linked in SpaceX’s development of Falcon 9, Dragon, Starlink, and Starship
• apply models such as the Innovation Matrix, Product–Process Matrix, SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, McKinsey 7S, and culture/leadership models to a real company case
• evaluate how vertical integration, rapid testing, and iterative development support SpaceX’s operational model
• analyse how leadership style and innovation culture influence employee behaviour, risk-taking, and organisational performance
• identify the tensions between innovation and control, especially in relation to scale, quality, regulation, and long-term growth

Target students
This pack is suitable for:
• Foundation and first-year undergraduate students in Business, Management, or Operations Management
• students studying Managing Organisation, Strategy, Innovation Management, or Leadership
• international students who benefit from a clear, applied case linking theory to a well-known company
• seminar, workshop, revision, or assessment-support sessions where students need guided practice in applying management models to a live business case
