A complete, engaging 90-minute GCSE English Language lesson designed to develop students’ confidence with analysing narrative texts and writer’s language choices, with a clear link to AQA Paper 1, Question 2.

The resource uses an immersive dark fantasy/adventure theme to make language analysis more accessible and engaging, particularly for GCSE resit and Post-16 students. Activities gradually move students from recognising how individual word choices change meaning through to producing a developed response to an 8-mark Paper 1 Question 2-style task.

Students explore:

how different language choices create different impressions
inference and reading between the lines
identifying deliberate language techniques
selecting useful quotations
analysing individual words and phrases
explaining effects on the reader
considering the writer’s intentions
developing analytical responses
applying these skills to an AQA-style Paper 1 Question 2
improving and reflecting on their own analysis.

The lesson includes student tasks alongside answer/model slides, allowing for immediate whole-class feedback and self-assessment. It culminates in an extended Paper 1 Question 2 activity followed by a Grade 5 model response and structured reflection plenary.

Bundle

GCSE English Language: From Language Analysis to Narrative Writing | AQA Paper 1 | 2-Lesson Bundle

A complete two-lesson GCSE English Language bundle that takes students through the full journey from analysing a writer’s language choices to applying those same choices in their own narrative writing. Designed particularly with GCSE resit, Post-16 and FE students aged 16–19 in mind, both lessons use an engaging epic dark-fantasy/battle theme with original characters and settings. The mature visual style is ideal for engaging reluctant writers and students who may find traditional GCSE English activities less accessible. The lessons are designed to work as a sequence: READ IT → ANALYSE IT → UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT → MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES → WRITE IT Lesson 1 – Analysing Stories & Writer’s Language A 90-minute lesson focusing on the skills needed for AQA English Language Paper 1 Question 2. Students develop their understanding of: identifying effective language choices and techniques making inferences from vocabulary selecting useful quotations zooming in on individual words and phrases exploring connotations explaining effects and impressions considering the writer’s intentions moving beyond simply spotting techniques developing analytical paragraphs applying their skills to an 8-mark Paper 1 Question 2-style response The lesson includes scaffolded tasks, answer slides, modelling, a Grade 5-level example and opportunities for students to develop increasingly independent analysis. Lesson 2 – Narrative Writing: Writing the Battle The second lesson flips the learning from reader to writer. Students take the language choices they have been analysing and deliberately apply them to their own creative writing, with a clear link to AQA English Language Paper 1 Question 5. The lesson begins by showing students how changing just one verb can completely alter the reader's impression before moving into improving weak descriptions, creating atmospheric settings and using show, don't tell to establish a powerful antagonist. The PowerPoint then develops students towards independent narrative writing. Students explore how setting can become part of the action itself and consider how vocabulary, imagery and personification can create mood, tension and danger. The lesson culminates in Now You're the Writer, where students create their own narrative about a lone warrior approaching an apparently unbeatable enemy. Students are encouraged to control setting, vocabulary, techniques, characterisation and sentence structure rather than simply including techniques for the sake of it. A detailed peer-assessment activity encourages students to annotate one another's work, identify specific strengths and leave constructive improvement comments. Why these lessons work well as a bundle Rather than teaching reading and writing as completely separate skills, the bundle helps students see the connection between them: Lesson 1: Why did the writer choose this word or technique? ↓ Lesson 2: What word or technique should I choose to create my intended effect? This helps students understand that techniques aren't simply features to identify or tick off a checklist. Writers make deliberate choices to control meaning, atmosphere, character and reader response. Bundle includes 2 complete PowerPoint lessons Approximately 3 hours of teaching material 29 slides across the two lessons Student-facing tasks Answer slides Scaffolded analysis Model responses Independent narrative writing Peer assessment Plenary/reflection activities Original dark-fantasy visual theme Both lessons are designed for minimal printing, with the majority of activities displayed directly from the board and completed in students' books.
