The first of three Research Methods units for Paper 2 Section C of the revised AQA specification, ready for the first examinations in June 2027. Every lesson is built around fictional research scenarios, because that is how Section C is examined: aims and hypotheses, variables and operationalisation, the four types of experiment, experimental designs, random allocation and counterbalancing, control, demand characteristics and investigator effects, sampling and pilot studies, ethics and the BPS code, and descriptive statistics.

What鈥檚 Included

  • Ten fully sequenced lessons, twelve slides each, following Rosenshine鈥檚 Principles of Instruction: Do Now, learning outcomes, explicit teaching, guided and independent practice, live marking, stretch and an exit ticket
  • Medium term plan with a specification coverage check, assessment points and teacher notes
  • Knowledge organisers: one page per area, plus issues and debates and a whole-unit summary with exam traps
  • Theory pack: complete student notes, worked examples, evaluation and practice questions for every area
  • Student workbook: every table, calculation grid, writing frame and exit ticket the lessons use
  • Two retrieval grids, one for each block of five lessons, with answer keys
  • Original Section C style assessment (24 marks on one research scenario, including a 12-mark design question) with mark scheme, a 12-mark design ladder and annotated responses at three levels
  • Model answers for every independent task, including a full Level 4 design

Ideal For

  • Year 12 Paper 2 teaching, before the first laboratory practical
  • Departments updating from the 2015 specification
  • New or non-specialist psychology teachers who want research methods taught through application, not lists
  • AS and A-level teaching

Bonus Features

  • Built around what examiners report: the null hypothesis as the commonest wrong answer, counterbalancing confused with random allocation and not applied, stratified confused with systematic sampling, ethics answers that explained when asked to identify, and data restated rather than interpreted. Lessons 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8 target each one
  • Plans Practical activity 2 (a laboratory experiment on memory) in the final lesson
  • A Extension Pack*: seven top-band moves, four debates and an annotated 12-mark design
  • Calculations modelled step by step: stratified samples, percentages, mean, median, mode and range
  • All questions and answers original; no past paper material reproduced

Resource Details

  • Qualification: AQA A-level Psychology (7182), Paper 2 Section C: Research methods (48 marks)
  • Lessons: 10, of about 60 minutes each
  • Formats: editable Word documents and slide-ready lesson content
  • Research Methods 2 (scientific processes and data handling) and Research Methods 3 (inferential testing and maths skills) are available separately.
