This Edexcel GCSE History (9–1) Anglo-Saxon and Norman England Starter and Retrieval Booklet is designed to support retrieval practice, exam preparation and lesson starters throughout the Anglo-Saxon and Norman England topic.

At the beginning of each lesson, students complete a 9-question retrieval grid. The questions revisit previous Anglo-Saxon and Norman England learning, helping students continually retrieve key knowledge as they progress through the course. The grids are also easy to adapt, allowing you to include retrieval questions from other GCSE History topics taught in your school if you wish.

Each lesson also includes an ‘Describe one feature of…’ 2-mark exam question, usually linked to previous learning. This gives students regular opportunities to practise the feature question and build a bank of completed exam questions for revision.

Sentence starters are included to support students with structuring clear and accurate responses.

The booklet also includes:

A clear ‘How to Answer’ guide for the 2-mark ‘Describe one feature of…’ question.
Sentence starters to help students structure strong exam responses.
An Anglo-Saxon and Norman England timeline for students to complete and annotate throughout the topic, supporting chronological understanding.
A Key People section for students to fill in as they encounter important individuals throughout the course.
An exam-question guide to support students with the different question styles they will encounter.

The resource is provided as an editable PowerPoint, so questions and activities can be easily changed to suit your classes, curriculum or the other GCSE topics taught in your school.

This can be used as a starter booklet throughout the Anglo-Saxon and Norman England topic, which is how it is used in lessons, with students completing a section at the beginning of each lesson. Alternatively, it can be used as a standalone revision booklet for Year 11, giving students a structured way to revisit key knowledge, chronology, key people and exam-style questions before their GCSE exams.

History GCSE Revision Booklets

(9–1) starter and retrieval booklets covering: * Paper 1 – Medicine Through Time * Paper 2 – Anglo-Saxon and Norman England * Paper 2 – Superpower Relations and the Cold War * Paper 3 – Weimar and Nazi Germany Each booklet follows the same clear and consistent format, making them easy for students to use across the different GCSE topics. At the beginning of each lesson, students complete a 9-question retrieval grid designed to revisit previous learning and strengthen long-term memory. These grids can also be easily edited if you wish to include retrieval questions from other topics. Each booklet then focuses on regularly practising one key exam question from that paper: * Medicine Through Time – the 4-mark comparison question. * Anglo-Saxon and Norman England – the ‘Describe one feature of…’ question. * Superpower Relations and the Cold War – the consequence question. * Weimar and Nazi Germany – the inference question. This means students are not only retrieving important knowledge at the start of each lesson, but are also repeatedly practising a specific exam skill. Over time, they can build confidence and become secure in picking up these marks without the question needing to be separately embedded into the middle of lessons. Each booklet also includes: * A timeline for students to complete and annotate throughout the topic. * A Key People section to build up as important individuals are introduced. * Clear ‘How to Answer’ exam guides for the different question types. * Sentence starters and structured support for exam responses. * Editable retrieval questions and activities. These resources work particularly well as starter booklets, with students completing a section at the beginning of each lesson. They can also be used as standalone revision booklets for Year 11, helping students revisit key knowledge, chronology, individuals and exam technique before their GCSE exams. All four booklets are designed in the same style, so students quickly become familiar with the layout and expectations, making this a simple and consistent resource to use across the Edexcel GCSE History course.
