A PPT which is part of a unit designed to teach students how to engage with a range of written and visual texts. This is the 2nd lesson (at the end of Term 1) and so is about general topics (including those previously examined).
This lesson covers:
• A recap of the types of texts students can expect for their seen and unseen stimulus
• A QCAA definition of representation and a simplified definition (more accessible to students)
• Synonyms for representation and an image that shows the power of perspective
• Finding representations of city living and country living in various visual stimulus (showing different texts portray the same topic in different ways)
• Looking at the purposes of 5 different types of texts: informative, explanatory, persuasive, entertaining and reflective.
• Related terms: target audience, positioning, intended reading.
• Other important terms: values, attitudes, beliefs, opinions, ideas
• A structure for providing evidence: Name It, Quote / Describe It, Explain It.
• List of Language Features and Text Structures for Visual Texts & Written Texts
• An example of how to annotate a text (an article about a Russian chess robot which broke an opponent’s finger)
• Using the same example, how to plan a 2 paragraph extended response
• One sample paragraph about how technology can endanger human life.
• Useful sentence starters for Representations, Ideas/opinions, Language Features, Text Structures and Positioning.
• Looking at representations of teenagers in clips (looking for specific things like attitudes, values, beliefs and cultural assumptions).

Context: A lesson designed for use in a 12 Essential English classroom in Queensland, Australia as part of Unit 3 “Language the Influences.” I have a mixed ability class (including QCIA learners).
