A PPT which is part of a unit designed to teach students how to engage with a range of written and visual texts. This is the 3rd lesson (at the end of Term 1) and so is about general topics (including those previously examined).

This lesson covers:
• A thorough explanation of opinions. (students must copy the text which is underlined).
• An explanation of ideas (and some synonyms – related terms)
• Examples of opinions and related ideas (side by side) regarding teenagers.
• 3 quotes about teenagers on the slide – students summarise each in their book
• Activity: looking at words in speech bubbles and categorising them into ideas and opinions (about city living vs country living)
• Important term: text
• Watching 3 comedians portraying people with views about teenagers (a mother, a teacher and a teen girl) to summarise their views
• Looking at a Dove advertisement (Reverse Selfie)
• Learning how advertisements work (the A.I.D.A. Acronym – attention, interest, desire, action)
• Some methods advertisers use: celebrity endorsements, customer testimonials, humour, inclusive language, call to action, evidence, appeal to being cool (bandwagon), sex appeal,
• Looking at more ads and visuals representing teenagers.

Context: A lesson designed for use in a 12 Essential English classroom in Queensland, Australia as part of Unit 3 “Language the Influences.” I have a mixed ability class (including QCIA learners).
